Your Life Changing Impact in Ethiopia: 2021 Annual Review
Every woman deserves access to a safe birth and quality maternal healthcare and no woman should have to experience the pain and suffering caused by obstetric fistula.
Thanks to your generous support over the past year we have been able to reach more women across Ethiopia; restoring health and dignity, preventing fistula and saving lives.
We are delighted to bring you our 2021 Annual Review where you can read about the impact of your support for our life changing work in Ethiopia.

Despite the challenges Ethiopia has faced over the past year including Covid-19 and civil unrest in the north of the country, the extraordinary efforts of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s team ensured that treatment, rehabilitation and prevention services continued to be delivered for women.
Further to this, thanks to the tremendous commitment of you and all Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s supporters around the world, we exceeded our 2020-21 targets for patients treated for devastating childbirth injuries by 12% – providing 1,567 life changing surgeries.
Your support has helped ensure that more women and girls across Ethiopia, like Medanit, whose story you can read in our review, have access to the vital care they need during pregnancy and birth, preventing fistulas and saving lives.
And that support is more important than ever.
As you may be aware Ethiopia has been in a period of civil unrest since November 2020, centred in the country’s far northern region of Tigray. More recently, this spread to neighbouring Amhara and Afar regions, impacting millions of lives.
You can read more about the impact of the unrest in Ethiopia and how our dedicated teams of health workers are continuing to deliver services, here.
A sad outcome of the conflict in Tigray is likely to be an increase in obstetric fistulas, as women in affected areas will have been unable to access the quality maternal healthcare services they need.
This year Hamlin is aiming to treat nearly 3,000 women across Ethiopia and we will only be able to do this with our supporters’ help.
Thank you for your continued support of vulnerable women and girls in Ethiopia.
