Tihiras is 37 and has four children which she delivered at home. She never visited a health centre for check-ups or follow-ups. In her own words, she explains how that may have caused her to suffer years of incontinence and isolation and why she is at a Hamlin Hospital for her sixth pregnancy.

During my fifth pregnancy, I faced a problem I had never encountered before: I developed urinary and faecal incontinence. This condition turned my life upside down.

I was filled with fear and shame, feeling as though I had lost my dignity. I withdrew from everyone, afraid of being judged and embarrassed.

For years, I lived in silence, confined to my home, as my condition made it painful to be around others. The burden of my situation was overwhelming; I even lost my hearing at times due to the stress.

Transportation to medical facilities was nearly impossible due to ongoing conflicts in my area, and I felt isolated and hopeless. My children had to help care for me, washing my soiled clothes, and I often wished things could be different. At one point, I even asked my husband to consider remarrying if my condition didn’t improve. However, he is a good man. He chose to remain by my side, caring for me and our children and providing support even when I felt unworthy of it.

Eventually, I learned about this hospital (Hamlin Mekele Fistula Hospital) and decided to seek treatment. Coming here was a turning point for me.

The care I received was exceptional; the staff treated me with kindness and respect. For the first time in years, I felt hope. I also regained my hearing, which had been affected by stress in the first place. I returned home feeling healthy and happy, knowing I would come back to ensure a safe delivery. That is why I am here now.

I am grateful for the comprehensive care they provide, ensuring that I have everything I need for this journey. The nurses and doctors have made me feel valued, and I can finally look forward to welcoming my new child without fear.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the staff who have helped me throughout my treatment and recovery. I also want to express my gratitude to the generous donors who contribute to our free care. Their support is changing lives, including mine, and for that, I will always be thankful.

This is how your support makes a difference.

Tihiras’s story only has a hopeful ending because of the generous donations we receive from supporters like you. If you’re able, please consider making a donation to support our work to treat more women like Tihiras.
