Turoworia went through several days of labour before being taken to a health centre. There she experienced the horrendous heartache of a stillborn baby and the further pain of obstetric fistula.

My journey truly began during that first pregnancy, marked by intense pain and isolation, especially after the loss of my baby.

Living with fistula

Turoworia explains in her own words: “I felt a lot of shame and struggled with the stigma surrounding my condition. However, I eventually found support at the Metu Hamlin Fistula Centre, where the staff were compassionate and understanding. Their care made a significant difference in my life.”

“The treatment I received at Metu Hamlin Center not only healed me physically but also restored my confidence and hope for the future. The love and support from the staff were incredible. They treated me with dignity and respect.”

“The staff gave me the confidence and support I needed to start my life anew. When I discovered I was pregnant again, I felt overwhelming joy, but I was also determined to have a different experience this time. I wanted to make sure I had the right support throughout my journey. That is why I returned to the Metu Hamlin Fistula Centre for my delivery. Their skilled team provided the care and support I needed throughout the process.”

Holding my child in my arms was a moment of pure joy and relief. It was something I had longed for, and the experience was made even more special by the support I received along the way.

Recovery is possible

“I want others to know that recovery from fistula is possible, and there is always hope. My experience has taught me the strength of resilience and the importance of community. I am incredibly grateful to the staff at Metu centre for their care and love. They truly changed my life. Thank you for everything!”
