Urgent Appeal: Devastating landslide in southern Ethiopia 

Today, we have a heartfelt URGENT appeal to make. A request regarding a situation that cannot wait until our Christmas Campaign.

This summer, a landslide in Gezei Gofa Woreda (district) in southern Ethiopia tragically killed over 200 people and caused thousands to evacuate.  

More than 15,000 people living in the affected area were advised to evacuate, due to risks of further landslides, including over 5,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers[1].

Hamlin is supporting improving maternal health services in Gofa Woreda, under our catchment area of Yirgalem Fistula Hospital, and supports three health centres in the surrounding area.

Luckily, the Hamlin midwives are all safe. But they need our help to support the women affected. 

We urgently need to raise funds to provide equipment and medical supplies to build on our support for women who need pre-natal and ante-natal health care in the region.  

Funds raised will provide medical supplies and equipment to support pregnant women in southern Ethiopia.  

Hamlin midwives based at our supported health centres in Gofa zone will be ready to support any displaced women who need pre-natal or ante-natal care in the aftermath of this devastating incident.”

Pregnancy in Ethiopia is already challenging. For the women who were forced to evacuate in fear of another deadly natural disaster, this has been a traumatic experience.

• £45 could pay for medical supplies such as umbilical cord clamps and sterile gloves which make it possible for babies to be delivered safely. 
  
  
• £75 could fund a foetal heart monitor and ultrasound gel, helping expectant mothers to receive high quality antenatal care. 
   
• £200 could top up a Hamlin midwife salary for one month, ensuring a highly trained health professional is ready to support the most vulnerable women. 
   
• £500 could pay for medical supplies such as umbilical cord clamps and sterile gloves which make it possible for babies to be delivered safely.
